TWIN FALLS - The former Minidoka County sheriff, who pleaded guilty to misuse of public funds, has reported to jail to serve his 90-day sentence.
Kevin Halverson surrendered at the Mini-Cassia Criminal Justice Center on Saturday night, but was soon moved to another jail, jail director Darwin Johnson told The Times-News. "He had ties to half the people who are incarcerated in the jail," Johnson said.
Sheriff Eric Snarr said he decided to move Halverson to another jail in Idaho because he didn't think he could keep him safe among inmates he may have arrested. Snarr would not say where Halverson was jailed.
Halverson, 47, was sentenced in September to 90 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to using a county credit card to put gasoline in the vehicle of a clerk in the driver's license division, with whom he was having an affair. The judge allowed him to defer his jail time until Feb. 1. He also agreed to pay $950 for restitution and the cost of the investigation.
A felony forgery charge filed against the clerk, Alicia Daniel, was dismissed on Jan. 30.
Prosecutors alleged she had been falsifying her timecards by saying she was working or was sick when she was spending time with Halverson.
