A 29-year-old Clarkston man was sentenced to serve probation instead of a prison sentence for attempting to take a police officer’s firearm and possessing methamphetamine.

Adam B. Riggs was charged in December after an altercation between him and Lewiston police in the bathroom at a Nom Nom on Southway Avenue.

Officers told Riggs he was going to be Tased, and Riggs started to pull the officer’s gun out of the holster.

Riggs was then Tased and taken into custody. After the incident officers found a jacket left by Riggs that had baggies of meth, according to the probable cause affidavit.

He pleaded guilty to possession of meth and assault or battery for attempting to remove a firearm from a law enforcement officer.

For the charge of possession of a controlled substance and attempting to remove a firearm, Riggs was sentenced to 2-4 years for each charge with the sentence suspended to serve four years of felony probation, along with 100 hours of community service for the possession charge.

For each charge, he was also given 30 days jail at the discretion of his probation officer, given credit for serving 48 days in jail and will also pay $1,091.

He was sentenced Thursday by 2nd District Judge Michelle Evans at the Nez Perce County Courthouse.

Three other misdemeanors were dismissed including resisting or obstructing officers, providing false information to an officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.
