BOISE - A Nampa carjacking suspect who eluded authorities for more than a week before being arrested in Montana briefly escaped from custody as he was being returned to Idaho to face charges.
The Ada County sheriff's office said Rodney Seiber, 36, ran away when a private security company's transport vehicle stopped to let him use the restroom along Interstate 84 southeast of Boise shortly before 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Officials said Seiber was shackled and handcuffed after he fled.
Officers shut down the freeway and set up a perimeter. At about 7 p.m., Seiber stepped out of a brushy area and surrendered to officers.
Prosecutors said at some point during his escape, Seiber brandished a knife and tried to get inside a vehicle, KBOI-TV reported. It was not clear where he got the knife.
Seiber's bail was set at $500,000 on the felony escape charge.
Seiber was being returned to Idaho to face charges for a Sept. 18 carjacking in Nampa. Police said he threatened an employee of a welding supply company and took a company van. He fled into a corn field after the van crashed.
His whereabouts were unknown until a motel clerk 670 miles away in Hardin, Mont., called to report trespassers on Sept. 23. Seiber's 18-year-old girlfriend was arrested in Hardin.
Seiber was arrested on Sept. 25 in an outbuilding near Garryowen on the Crow Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana. He waived extradition during an Oct. 2 court hearing in Hardin.
