BOISE Republican Harold Bunderson, a retired certified public accountant, has been appointed to fill the vacancy in the Idaho Senate created by the resignation of veteran Sen. Herb Carlson of Eagle.

Democratic Gov. Cecil Andrus called Bunderson, 56, a qualified person who would devotedly serve the voters of the western Ada County district in making the appointment on Monday.

Bunderson was among three nominees submitted to Andrus by Republican leaders in the district. The other two were retired financial planner Cliff Chambers and Shirley McKague, who has been serving as secretary to the House Transportation Committee.

A dozen people vied for the seat Carlson, a moderate, held for 13 years before resigning last month to become a full-time member of the state Industrial Commission.
