Blast from the Past / 1990: A man who loves horsepower
Orval Syron poses at his spread east of Kooskia with a couple of his 11 horses in this Michael Haberman photo published in the March 18, 1990, Lewiston Tribune. The accompanying story was one in Haberman's Elders series and told of Syron's love of literal horsepower, and how he built and rebuilt sleighs, wagons and carriages for the beasts to pull. Syron reminisced about growing up in the 1920s on a farm near Nezperce and going on nightime sleigh rides in the winters to his grandparents' place to listen to their radio. He also recalled the work on the farm, which had no electricity: "I can remember when I was 12 years old driving nine horses on a three-bottom gang plow."
