Susan Armitage talks about the lack of women in Western history in this Shawn Jacobson photo taken in Pullman and published in the Aug. 9, 1983, Lewiston Tribune. Armitage, a history professor at Washington State University in Pullman, was preparing to attend a national conference on women in Western history in Sun Valley, according to an accompanying story by reporter Alice Koskela. Armitage, who was to open the conference with the keynote address, said traditional Western history has given the impression that this region was occupied almost entirely by men. The conference was to include talks by about 50 Western women’s historians.
