GRANGEVILLE — More than 300 Appaloosa and history enthusiasts will retrace a 100-mile segment of the route taken by Chief Joseph during the Nez Perce War southwest of here beginning Monday.

The five-day horseback ride is sponsored by the Appaloosa Horse Club Inc., a national organization based in Moscow.

In addition to Appaloosa riders from the Northwest, the trek has attracted riders from New York, Texas, California, Ohio and Iowa, among other states, and even a former Pennsylvanian now living in Saudi Arabia, according to Debbie Bryngelson, horse club secretary.

Acting Capt. Rod Frederiksen of the Lewiston City Police Department has submitted his resignation effective July 18 and plans to enter private business in Lewiston.

Frederiksen, who joined the police force in January 1972, will assume a position with Prudential Insurance Co. of America in July, working out of district offices at 145 Thain Road.

“I have contemplated this for quite some time,” he said, “and now seems to be the right time for the change.”
