PULLMAN — Despite going winless on the mound, Washington State starting pitcher A.J. Block was selected in the MLB draft by the Detroit Tigers with the fifth pick of the 17th round on Wednesday, and three of his teammates were also selected.
Those other Cougars picked up were shortstop Andres Alvarez (selected in the 22nd round by the Pittsburgh Pirates), centerfielder Danny Sinatro (taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 32nd round) and first baseman Dillon Plew (picked in the 40th round by the Houston Astros).
Block went 0-8 with a 6.06 ERA and appeared in 14 games, starting all of them. He struck out more than twice as many batters (68) as he walked (32).
Committing just six errors, Alvarez had a fielding percentage of .974 and assisted on 138 outs. He hit .289.
Sinatro — who ended the year on a 12-game hitting streak — led all starters with a .325 average, and belted five triples. Plew hit .270 with four home runs and 29 RBI.
WSU finished its year with an 11-42-1 record. The Cougars’ coach, Marty Lees, was fired before the end of the season.
LCSC 19th in final poll
The Lewis-Clark State baseball team returned to the top 25 for the first time since early March, finishing at No. 19 in the final NAIA Coaches Poll.
When L-C dropped out of the rankings three months ago, it was the first time in 40 years that the poll hadn’t featured the Warriors.
L-C went 1-2 at the NAIA World Series, its one win being over Freed-Hardeman, the runner-up in 2018. The Warriors finished the year with a 35-15-1 record.
Hammer time: Cougars’ Eager 12th at NCAAs
AUSTIN, Texas — Washington State’s Brock Eager placed 12th overall in the hammer throw at the NCAA Championships on Wednesday.
Eager, a senior, had a mark of 222-1 to notch his third career All-American honor and wrap up “an amazing season and an amazing collegiate career,” coach Wayne Phipps said.
WSU’s Nick Johnson, who was also competing at the NCAAs, finished 19th overall in the 110-meter hurdles, not advancing past the preliminary round. He finished fifth during the second heat of the event with a time of 14.01.
