Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 7-4, Moscow Blue Devils 4-5

COEUR D’ALENE — The traveling Moscow Blue Devils led in Game 1 before a fifth-inning Coeur d’Alene rally upended them, then held on through another fifth-inning surge from their foes to win Game 2 of a league doubleheader.

The Lumbermen took the first contest 7-4, while the Blue Devils edged a 5-4 win in the second.

“We weathered that storm a little better,” Moscow coach Stan Mattoon said of the second game. The Blue Devils (10-5) were up 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth in the opener, but had “a couple of defensive lapses” that enabled the Lumbermen to strike back with six runs in that frame and assert their winning lead.

Moscow led 4-0 at the same stage in the second game before Coeur d’Alene rallied to 4-4, but Barrett Abendroth completed what would prove to be the winning run for the Blue Devils in the sixth.

Marcus Delusa had a team-high two RBI in the second game.

“His bat has been starting to come around,” Mattoon said of Delusa. “He’s working very hard at making good contact. It was nice to see him finally put everything together and have a couple of key hits.

“Hayden Thompson’s double was something that lit a fire under us and got us rolling,” continued Mattoon. “Marcus, Hayden and Barrett stepped up and kind of helped seal that win for us. They were the glue that kind of held us together.”
