Mae H. McGill, 94, of Orofino, died Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation. She had been diagnosed with cancer in March.
She was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Richey. Mont., to Vera and Leonard Olson. Mae finished her high school education in Libby, Mont., where she met Clayton McGill. They eloped to Bonners Ferry on Aug. 10, 1940. They were living in Libby when Clay was drafted into the U.S. Army in October 1942 during World War II. Their first son, Mike, was born in March 1945. The family lived in Spokane when, in November 1950, their son Steve was born. The family then moved to Libby. In 1956, they moved to Orofino.
Mae, while being a housewife and mother, also worked outside the home. She worked in restaurants in Libby and at Riverside Lanes in Orofino. One special summer, she was the manager of the Orofino swimming pool.
Mae and Clay spent many summer days on Dworshak catching "silvers." They would can what they needed for themselves then keep fishing and give away what they caught. They also delivered Meals on Wheels during their retirement.
Clay was killed in an automobile accident on Aug. 22, 1995. After his death, Mae moved to Spokane to be closer to her son Mike and her two sisters. Mae got involved at a senior center and enjoyed many of the activities, especially bingo. When her health began to fail, she moved back to Orofino in February 2014. She resided at Brookside Landing until May 2015, when her health dictated the need for more care and she moved to Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation.
The family would like to thank the staff at both Brookside Landing and Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation for the care Mae received and the love she felt.
Mae is survived by two sons, Mike McGill (Vickie) of Spokane Valley, Wash., and Steve McGill (Joellen) of Orofino; four grandchildren, Michael (Julie) McGill of Lewiston, Matt (Kelly) McGill of University Place, Wash., Lisa (Ryan) Bradetich of Pullman and Ryan (Lynae) McGill of Boise; and nine great-grandchildren, Tanner (Camille) McGill, Alyssa McGill, Ellie McGill, Cody McGill, Tori McGill, Allyson Bradetich, Ian Bradetich, Jocelyn McGill and Gavin McGill. She is also survived by two sisters, Lillian Kusmic of Kalispell, Mont., and Hazel (John) Kampfe of Troy, Mont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clay McGill; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. Memorial donations may be paid to the charity of one's choice.
