RIGGINS — Idaho County officials have been searching for a 34-year-old man who is believed to have drowned in the Salmon River about 15 miles east of Riggins Friday.

Idaho County Sheriff Doug Giddings said the man reportedly jumped into the river to help rescue three children and at least one adult who had been in a canoe that overturned near the Twin Beaches campground. The people were with a family gathering along the river.

The children had life jackets on and made it to shore, along with the adult and one other man who had tried to rescue the children, Giddings said.

The 34-year-old man, whose name he could not immediately supply, was pulled under the current, Giddings said.

Idaho County sheriff’s deputies and the Idaho County Posse searched the area Saturday and Sunday but could not find the man.

No further information was immediately available Sunday night.
