North Lewiston chlorine spill draws response

Lewiston police blocked off about three blocks around an industrial supply facility in North Lewiston where a 150-pound tank of chlorine accidentally spilled Thursday. No injuries were reported and a multi-agency hazmat team responded to assist in cleanup at Oxarc, 2513 Third Ave., N. Oxarc was evacuated, as well as several residences within 500 feet of the building. Residences downwind of the spill were evacuated, not the entire area, Lewiston Police Lt. Jeff Klone said. The area was cordoned off for several hours after crews responded at about 2:30 p.m. The Region Two Hazardous Materials Response Team cleaned up the spill and the area was reopened by 6 p.m.
