DU PONT, Wash. -- A Pierce County corrections officer stepped into a dropoff while fishing in the Nisqually River and drowned after his hip waters filled with water, authorities said.

The body of Tom McKeown, 38, of Lakewood, was recovered by Thurston County sheriff's divers Saturday, a day after others fishing on the river saw McKeown slip beneath the surface.

His body was found about 150 feet downstream from Frank's Landing, where McKeown had been fishing near about 10 others.

Authorities said his hip waders, essentially tall rubber boots, apparently filled with water and pulled him under near the center of the river just upstream from the Interstate 5 bridge.
