PULLMAN — Washington State University is using a $3 million federal grant to enhance safety and security measures on its Pullman campus.

The university announced in a news release Monday the funding was part of the 2024 Office of Community Oriented Policing Services’ Technology and Equipment Program. The award is the largest amount granted to an agency within the state of Washington, totaling more than $240 million in allotments nationwide.

The WSU Pullman Safety Enhancement Project grant will fund 120 new cameras on campus, bringing the total to 420.

It will also pay for remote door control to more than 60 doors in high-traffic student areas such as the Compton Union Building and Terrell Library.

The new cameras will expand and augment coverage of campus, including crucial infrastructure like the Nuclear Science Center and other research labs, along with more parking lots.

Additionally, nine student and family housing apartment complexes will receive cameras in response to concerns raised by the Graduate and Professional Student Association.

The university is assessing potential vendors to provide the upgrades, and expects work to begin early next year.
