MOSCOW — The Moscow retail outlet of Fiddler’s Ridge Farm has moved to make room for the expansion of Northwest River Supplies (see related story above).
The business is now just south of Moscow at 2730 U.S. Highway 95 S., sharing an entrance with Wasankari’s Construction, which carries recycled landscaping and building materials.
Fiddler’s Ridge Farm’s retail space had been in the parking lot of the NRS warehouse along Troy Road/State Highway 8 in Moscow. That building is undergoing an expansion so extensive there is no longer space for Fiddler’s Ridge Farm.
The Moscow location is one of two Fiddler’s Ridge Farm operates. The other is just outside Potlatch, where the business grows many of the plants it sells.
Keeping the Moscow presence is important because it accounts for about 30 percent of sales, said John Madden, who owns Fiddler’s Ridge Farm with his wife, Theresa Greiner.
So far, the sales volume is is running at roughly 80 percent of what it was last year in Moscow, but Madden that believes it’s only because customers are struggling to find them.
That will likely be a short-term setback, he said, since so many of Wasankari’s customers also need the plants Fiddler’s Ridge Farm offers.
“Eventually, I think this will be better,” Madden said.
The different Moscow venue is the most significant change this year for the business that began as a side venture for the couple in 1992 when they used the Moscow Farmers Market as a business incubator to test the demand for their products.
In the decades the business has been open, it has developed a niche for raising and selling hard-to-find plants based on customer suggestions.
Among them are Sun Jewel, an Asian melon similar to cantaloupe, and less common types of herbs such as After 8 Chocolate Mint, which carries a scent of chocolate.
“You can’t find what you want from wholesalers,” Madden said. “It’s a mass market, so they limit themselves to the most popular stuff. ... People who want diversity come to us.”
