Blast from the Past / 1976: Ready for the first cut

Jake Altmiller of Orofino uses a guide and file to put a razor edge on the teeth of his chainsaw in this photo by Tribune photographer Roy C. Woods first published in the Sept. 18, 1976, Tribune. The accompanying story by reporter Hal Hollister detailed the competition at the annual Clearwater County Fair and Lumberjack Days in Orofino. Altmiller was a regular competitor in the power-sawing contest, and in 1976 was the defending champion. He said, “The way you file your saw — and everybody uses his own saw in the contest — is all important. In fact, I’d say the man who does the best job of filing usually wins.” Altmiller, a logger, had competed in sawing contests since 1947.
