Blast from the Past / 1973: Longtime printer retires

Ray Abbott is shown on the job in this photo published in the April 13, 1973, Lewiston Tribune with a story about his April 1 retirement as foreman of the Tribune Commercial Printing department. Abbott worked nearly 50 years as a printer and press operator, according to the accompanying story by reporter Thomas W. Campbell. The longtime member of the International Typographical Union also worked as a U.S. Forest Service smokejumper in the late 1930s and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. The Asotin County native was 65 when he retired after 16 years as foreman.
