Blast from the Past / 1990: Jailed for a good cause

Six desperate citizens of the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley work the phones trying to raise enough bail donations to secure their release from a temporary “jail” set up in the Lewiston Center Mall in this Barry Kough photo published in the Sept. 14, 1990, Tribune. Their Sept. 13 “arrest” and detainment was part of an American Cancer Society fundraiser which saw a total of 17 people thrown into the hoosegow. Their pleas raised $4,200 in pledges to be donated to the society, according to Ted Riceci of Lewiston, general co-chairman of the drive. Plans were afoot to have “police officers” (actually, members of the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team) take another 19 people into “custody” in the second day of the fundraiser. Riceci said the total raised Thursday exceeded the previous year’s two-day total.
