JULIAETTA - Kyle Van Boeyen struck out eight in five innings as the L-C Cubs mercy-ruled Colter's Creek 13-0 in league play on Tuesday. The Bucks were allowed only three hits as Van Boeyen finished with no walks and one free base on a hit-by-pitch.

"That's pretty good," Cubs coach Mark Medalia said of Van Boeyen after adding that his ace had thrown 65 pitches. "He was very dominant, he just filled out the strike zone and let the defense do their work."

Offensively, L-C (4-7) came out strong, stringing together seven runs in the first and capping off the second with three.

"Besides the fact that we did have a couple errors, we're improving drastically," Medalia said. "We're making big improvements since our first game, first practice. The guys are showing a lot of life. Showing signs of a team that's getting better."

The night before, the Cubs had sunk their first half of a doubleheader against Orofino 9-10 before swinging back in the nightcap to win 11-7 at Harris Field. Monday's games were reported late to the Tribune.

Blue Devils 9, Capital 4

MOSCOW - At this point in the season, the Blue Devils know they have starting pitching they can rely on. Now they need to test the strength of their depth.

Insert Jacob Gray, Jack Dunn and Bryan Vis, three young arms who have seen little to no time on the mound this season. The trio, each 16 years old or younger, left coach Griffin Rod smiling as he jogged to the dugout after they combined keep the visiting Capital Bulldogs mostly in check during Tuesday's 9-4 nonleague win at the Moscow School District Community Playfields.

"I was really glad. Once we get to conference games we're going to put the guys out there who prove they can throw strikes, basically," said Rod, whose plan was to give each pitcher at least two innings on the mound.

Asotin County Blues 5-0,

Gonzaga Prep Bullpups 4-10

SPOKANE - Behind a strong effort on the mound from Devin Fry, the Asotin County Blues picked up a 5-4 win in the game that mattered - a Spokane AA League contest against Gonzaga Prep - before falling to the Bullpups 10-0 in a game that didn't count toward the league standings.

The Blues needed a three-run seventh inning in the opener to come out victorious after falling behind 4-2. Their three-, four- and five-hole hitters gave it to them.

Brady Chadwick reached base, Mitch Miller notched a single and a wild pitch advanced both one base. Grant Kinzer then stepped to the plate and delivered a double to score both of his teammates. Kinzer then scored the fifth run on a sacrifice fly.

"It was a very good job by our 3-4-5 hitters coming up big," Asotin County coach Perry Black said, noting the opponent carried a perfect 3-0 league record entering the game.

Fry allowed only one earned run in six innings and did a good job of "mixing in his fastball and curveball," Black said.

Kinzer and Elliott Marks each had two RBI in the game.

The Blues got a team-high three hits on the day from Tyson Collins, who recorded the lone Asotin County hit in the nightcap.

With the split, the Blues moved to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in league play.
