Jessup Scott swatted two doubles and a homer, leading the Lewis-Clark Twins offensively in a doubleheader sweep of Northern Lakes of Rathdrum on Tuesday evening at Harris Field.

The Twins won the first 11-1 in six innings, then dispatched of the visitors in the second, stealing an 8-4 victory.

A night after letting a seven-run lead slip out of their hands, the Twins (18-15) appeared to have learned a thing or two about closing out games. They scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the mercy rule in the first game, then added three insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings of the second to assure themselves of the sweep.

"Probably one of the better efforts in the season," L-C coach Allen Balmer said. "It was better than the night before and we finished a couple of games."

Both of Scott's doubles came in the first game and were two of four extra-base hits L-C would end up with. Luke White tallied two more hits - one of which was a homer.

"Jessup the last two days has been pretty good," said Balmer, noting his catcher had collected six or seven hits through the Twins' last three games. "He's led us through the last three games with his bat."

In the second game, the Twins got two hits apiece from Dalton Stamper and Jaden Phillips.

Moscow 15-8, N. Lakes 12-5

RATHDRUM - Utilizing a number of fresh, less-experienced arms, the Moscow Blue Devils still made it through Tuesday's doubleheader against Northern Lakes of Rathdrum unscathed, winning 15-12 and 8-5 to gain some momentum heading into the Clancy Ellis Tournament.

Matt Shears and Peyton Broenneke both made their first starts of the season, as Shears went four innings and Broenneke 41/3.

"We needed to pitch a couple guys hadn't pitched, to set up ourselves for the tournament," Moscow coach Griffin Rod said. "They were mostly relief guys pitching here and there, but we asked them to step up to give our guys a break and they did exactly that. They did just enough to keep us in the ballgame."

As did Duke Richardson, who collected seven hits - including one triple - on the day. Teammate Chad Robertson finished with five hits - three of which were doubles.

Moscow recorded 18 hits in the opener and 11 in the second game, outhitting the hosts 29-19. The Blue Devils committed just two errors to Northern Lakes' seven.

The scores were 8-5 and 6-0. Orofino improved to 15-11 overall and 11-7 in league.

The Merchants trailed in the opener 5-2 before they erupted for six runs in the sixth. That rally was powered by four hits, two walks, an error and three wild pitches.

In the second game, pitchers Sabatino and Walker kept Sandpoint under wraps, as they combined to strike out 11 while walking two.

The Merchants had just five hits in the second game, but got a few big ones, including Walker Reggear's solo homer.

Former Cougars earn minor league All-Stars status

PULLMAN - Ex-Washington State pitcher Adam Conley was selected to start in the Triple-A All-Star Game for the Pacific Coast League, while former third baseman Nick Tanielu started for the West in the Single-A Midwestern League All-Star game.

Conley was a second-round pick by the Miami Marlins in 2011 and has recorded an 8-2 record with a 2.33 ERA and 62 strikeouts, starting in 15 games for the Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs this season. The Olympia, Wash., native was recently named the PCL Pitcher of the Week and has won three of his last four starts.

Tanielu, a 14th-round pick by the Houston Astros, is hitting .304 with two homers, 13 doubles and has tallied 34 RBI in 65 games for the Quad Cities River Bandits. Tanielu was named the Most Valuable Player of the New York-Penn League All-Star Game last season.
