A number of Greek organizations have been investigated, sanctioned and disbanded this year as a result of reported incidents of hazing, sexual assault, racism and alcohol-fueled behavior. Here are some lowlights:

  • Feb. 19: The University of Idaho Dean of Students Office imposed sanctions on its Phi Gamma Delta fraternity after investigating allegations of hazing during the prior week. A criminal investigation was initiated by the Moscow Police Department on March 6 and concluded with no criminal charges filed. The incident remains under review by the university’s Greek Community Standards Board.
  • Feb. 21: A member of Washington State University’s Phi Delta Theta fraternity allegedly made racist and sexist remarks to a woman attempting to attend a party at the chapter house. The man has been removed from the fraternity and the incident is going through WSU’s student conduct process.
  • March 9: The national Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity shut down its University of Oklahoma chapter after discovering a video showing members singing a racist song. Two of the students found to be leaders in the song were expelled.
  • March 16: A Facebook page allegedly used by members of the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity at Penn State to post photos of nude or partially nude women surfaced and resulted in the chapter’s suspension. Police initiated an investigation into the allegations that reportedly include images of some women asleep or passed out.
  • March 17: The Sigma Chi chapter and five members at the University of Houston were suspended for allegations of hazing that reportedly occurred in January. Investigations by the national fraternity and the university’s police department were initiated.
  • March 18: The Sigma Alpha Mu chapter at the University of Michigan was disbanded by the national organization after some of its members caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage by trashing two ski resorts during an alcohol-fueled weekend.
  • April 24: A representative from the national Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity visited Eastern Washington University as part of an investigation into allegations of unspecified misconduct at its chapter in Cheney.
  • April 28: The University of Florida closed its Zeta Beta Tau fraternity following allegations that its members were urinating on flags, vomiting off balconies and drunkenly insulting and spitting on disabled military veterans at a Panama City Beach resort. The fraternity expelled three of its members prior to the overall shutdown.
