Idaho County Sheriff Doug Giddings says he expects more information today

GRANGEVILLE - A body found in the Salmon River over the weekend has not yet been identified, according to Idaho County Sheriff Doug Giddings.

The sheriff's office received a report of a body in the river near U.S. Highway 95, milepost 220 - about a mile north of Skookumchuck Creek rest area - at 10:20 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release issued Sunday.

Dave Olson reportedly discovered the body, listed in the news release as male, approximately 10 feet into the river, caught on debris. Olson's son Derek went missing March 20 when his vehicle went into the river at milepost 192.4.

The 2010 Hyundai Derek Olson was driving was recovered, but his body was not inside. The water was too swift for divers to attempt looking for the body at that time, Giddings said.

Dave Olson had been searching the river regularly for his son since the March incident, Giddings said.

He anticipates information regarding identification of the body will be provided by the coroner's office today, Giddings said.

"We're missing a female too, so we're being very cautious," he said. "We don't want to speculate."

The body of Cayla Danenberg, 20, was not recovered after the car she was driving plunged into the Salmon River at milepost 210.9 in May 2016.

Danenberg and Tiffany Maupin, 21, were students at the University of Idaho, returning to Moscow from Nampa. Maupin's body was recovered about six miles downstream from the accident scene.
