A motorhome was destroyed and its occupant was injured when the vehicle caught fire Thursday afternoon in North Lewiston.
The vehicle caught fire while it was parked on North Sixth Avenue near the Lewis-Clark Terminal, according to Lewiston police Sgt. Craig Roberts. It appears the fire was caused by a mechanical issue, Roberts added.
The occupant of the motorhome was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center by private vehicle, Roberts said. He was working on the vehicle and received “minor burns,” according to a Lewiston Fire Department news release.
The person later left the hospital on his own and his condition is unknown.
The fire burned the motorhome to a cinder and sent a black plume of smoke wafting above the valley at around 4:30 p.m.
Roberts said when motorhomes catch fire, they often are severely burned because of the propane that is on board. Witnesses of Thursday’s fire said they heard explosions in the motorhome before first responders arrived, Roberts said.
Lewiston police and the Lewiston Fire Department responded to the fire. A tow truck removed the remains of a vehicle, with some difficulty.
The news release from the fire department estimate the value of the destroyed motorhome to be approximately $7,500.
