Officials release age of shooting victim

PECK - Authorities have released the ages of two boys involved in an accidental shooting that resulted in one boy's death Thursday night.

A 9-year-old boy was killed after a gun was accidentally discharged by a 14-year-old boy, said Sgt. Patrick Santos with the Nez Perce County's Sheriff Office. He declined to identify the boys Friday because of the pending investigation, but said the two were known to each other.

The incident was reported about 4:55 p.m. on the 22400 block of Big Canyon Road near Peck. Three boys reportedly were playing in a bedroom while their adult supervisors were feeding livestock. The 14-year-old boy reportedly found the gun and was attempting to move it to a safe location when it discharged.

No charges have been filed, and Santos said it was not known if any would be filed. No additional information was available Friday.

"At this time, the investigation is still ongoing," he said.

Bond set at $10,000 for woman accused of embezzelment

ASOTIN - Bond was set at $10,000 Friday for a Lewiston woman accused of embezzling more than $4,000 from a Clarkston school union.

Abigail S. Brood, 36, appeared Friday in Asotin County Superior Court for one felony charge of second-degree theft. She is in custody at the Asotin County Jail.

The charge stems from allegations she used money from the union, Clarkston Classified Association, for personal items. The unauthorized charges reportedly include $649 for a night at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane on Valentine's Day.

Brood formerly served as president of the union. The alleged fraudulent charges came to light when a new leader took over in July, according to court documents. Brood is no longer employed by the Clarkston School District.

Brood allegedly made additional transactions using union money after July, according to court documents, including a charge of $1,440 to pay an Avista power bill. She reportedly told police she used the union's credit card only for union-related expenses.

Her next court appearance is set for Feb. 27. If convicted, second-degree theft, a class C felony, carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of $10,000.
