Simpson tries to stall sheep grazing limits

Bill rider would allow 5 years to develop pneumonia vaccine for bighorns

Posted: Friday, July 8, 2011 12:00 am

An Idaho congressman is trying to prevent grazing restrictions designed to protect wild bighorn sheep on the Payette National Forest from being expanded to other federal forests throughout the West.

Republican Rep. Mike Simpson attached a rider to an Interior Appropriations bill that would block the Forest Service from slashing domestic sheep grazing in areas where bighorn sheep are present. The rider would be in effect for five years and is designed to give scientists time to come up with a vaccine that prevents the transfer of pneumonia from domestic to wild sheep.
