Portland port officials visit area customers

Labor issues among concerns for shippers who use Snake and Columbia rivers to move products

A potential labor dispute is brewing as the Sept. 30 expiration date nears for the contract of union workers who handle bulk grain at elevators in the Pacific Northwest.

"There'll either be a new contract or not," said Sam Ruda, chief commercial officer at the Port of Portland. "Obviously (the Port) is watching to see how ultimately this gets settled."
