Idaho Vandals wide receiver Ken McRoyal was killed in California early Sunday morning, the university has announced.
Details of his death were not available.
The University of Idaho released a statement at 10 a.m. this morning confirming McRoyal's passing.
“It’s a devastating loss,” UI coach Robb Akey said in the school's written release. “We’ve lost a brother, a teammate, a family member. But, more importantly, a momma lost her son today.
“All of our prayers go to the family – that they can be strong in their healing from this tragedy.”
UI athletic director Rob Spear echoed Akey.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Kenny,” Spear said in the release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
McRoyal joined the Vandals last fall as a walkon receiver after transferring from El Camino Junior College in Torrance, Calif. He had earned a scholarship for the coming school year.
As a junior, McRoyal caught six passes for 35 yards in eight games during the 2011 season. He was a native of New Orleans, La., and moved with his family to California after the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
